We Visited Newgrange!!!!!

December 14, 2012

On December 13th the boys in Ms. Mulvey’s class visited Newgrange and the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre. We wrapped up in our winter woolies and braced ourselves for the cold! We arrived at the Visitor Centre first where we got to look at an exhibition based on Newgrange. We learned how the passage tomb at Newgrange was built 5,000 years ago, and how archaeologists believe the tomb was built. After we watched a short film about the winter solstice, we were able to travel up to the tomb itself and look inside. There we met our wonderful tour guide, Sinéad, who was able to answer all of our questions. Sinéad showed us how the tomb is in darkness on the morning of December 21st each year, and then as the sun rises, a shaft of light passes through the roof-box over the entrance of the tomb and lights it up.  We learned a lot about Newgrange, and were able to design our own ‘Megalithic Symbols’ when we arrived back to school.
