The Normans Are Coming!

March 23, 2013

By Will

We have been busy learning all about the Normans in Miss Mulvey’s class. We discovered that the Normans were descendants of the Vikings that settled in Normandy, France. The Normans arrived in Ireland in 1169 at Bannow Bay, Co. Wexford. They came to help Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster (at the request of King Henry of England). We looked at the types of homes the Normans built. We explored how the Normans built a motte and bailey, before looking at the stone castles they built. We were able to search on the Internet and view remains of Norman Castles in Ireland today. The boys were then set a task to create their own Norman Castle………Look at the amazing standard of work that they produced!
